It has become mandatory for the business executives ‘to learn the ways of the world’ which is quite complex considering diversity in cultures, mannerisms, and individualities. In this context, we shall explain in detail the manners, cultural relationships and etiquette of North America.
The population consists of mixed heritages and races. Though, predominantly European, this country has welcomed any person from the world and boasts of a high immigration levels in the world. There are many cultural enclaves in which different languages are encouraged, but, otherwise, English is the main language here. Christianity is the major religion with approximately 84% of the population practicing this in some form or the other.
Business is influenced by the laws written both at the national and the state level (there are 50 Federal states). One must meet the requirements at a litigious level with the help of legal resources and specialists available. The culture and geographic location will also act as influencing factors. Honest and hard work will be rewarded is the main ethic. Creativity and Intelligence are treated as invaluable assets. Time, money and Punctuality are highly rewarded.
The Geert Hofstede analysis gives a clear explanation in terms of ranking the countries with respect to 5 key factors being Power Distance, Individualism, Uncertainty Avoidance, Masculinity and Long-term Orientation. These scores will enable us to understand in detail the general public that constitutes that particular nation. Hofstede Scores
A clear analysis shows that Individualism is ranked highest amongst the Americans and a low ranking of long-term orientation reflects that the person is free from traditional commitments. Therefore, individuals are more flexible and also have the freedom to react to new opportunities that come their way. Further, there are only seven countries that have rated individualism highly thus creating a strong connection of America with them. According to the Hofstede scores, the individualism dimensions are at U.S.A (91), Australia (90), U.K. (89), Netherlands and Canada (80) and Italy (76). Thus, the society as a whole is individualistic, self-reliant, and bonds with others with few strings attached.
The next highest dimension is Masculinity (69) in comparison to a World Average at only 50. This implies that there exists a higher differentiation of roles based on the genders. With the male dominating the society, the female is forced to become more assertive and competitive. This is a major reason for more women shifting from the traditional role of women to a more dominant male role. Cultural traditions have the least impact as exhibited by the least rank in long-term orientation. Power Distance is rated at 40 (World average at 55), indicating that there is far greater equality amongst the societal levels from the family level, and also across the governments and organizations. Uncertainty Avoidance at 46 (World average at 64) implies that the nation is tolerant of a variety in ideas, thoughts and beliefs. This factor exposes the society does not attempt to control outcomes and results arising from the cultural influences.
